Legal Terms 101: Placement

What are the legal terms that I should be aware of concerning my children in the event of a divorce?

“Placement” pertains to whom your children will live with after the divorce is finalized. One parent may be awarded primary placement, or the parents may be awarded some type of shared placement. Primary placement means that one parent will have 75% or more overnight periods of placement with your children.  Shared placement means that each parent will have overnight placement with the child in their home more than 92 overnights per year. If you cannot reach an agreement with your spouse regarding placement, often times the Court will appoint a Guardian Ad Litem to address this issue on behalf of the Court.
