The Reason Behind the Robe

We all know that Judges wear robes over their clothes in the court room. There is much historical symbolism behind a Judge donning their robe. The Judge represents the power of the laws of our land. The Judge is to be regarded by all who come before him or her as the ultimate legal authority.

You will note that the Judge is always addressed as “Your Honor.” You will also notice that before the Judge enters the room, everyone is required to rise, and is instructed to sit after the Judge’s court has been called into session. You might notice that many attorneys will ask the Judge permission to approach the Judge’s bench to circulate papers. All of these acts are a demonstration of respect, which is afforded to a Judge in his or her courtroom. You should follow all of this protocol. You should never interrupt or argue with a Judge.
